Poker Is a Math Game Disguised as a Card Game
The best poker players don't rely on reads and instinct — they rely on math. Knowing exact odds lets you make profitable decisions every hand, regardless of who you're playing against. This chart covers every probability you need, from pre-flop to river.
Pre-Flop Hand Odds
Pocket Aces (AA): dealt once every 221 hands (0.45%). Wins 85% vs one random hand. Pocket Kings (KK): 0.45%, wins 82%. Ace-King suited: 0.3%, wins 67% vs a random hand. Any pocket pair: 5.9% (once every 17 hands). Any suited connector (87s, 98s, etc.): 3.9%. Key rule: premium hands (AA, KK, QQ, AK) make up only 2.6% of all starting hands. If you're playing more than 20-25% of hands, you're playing too many.
Post-Flop Drawing Odds
Flush draw (4 to a flush on flop): 34.97% to hit by river (roughly 1 in 3). Open-ended straight draw: 31.45% by river. Gutshot straight draw: 16.47% by river. Two pair to full house: 16.74% by river. Set (trips) on flop with pocket pair: 11.76% (roughly 1 in 8.5). Hitting a flush on the turn only: 19.15%. Hitting a flush on the river only: 19.57%. The Rule of 4 and 2: count your outs, multiply by 4 on the flop (2 cards to come) or by 2 on the turn (1 card to come) for a quick percentage estimate.
Pot Odds: The Most Important Concept
Pot odds tell you whether calling is profitable. Formula: pot odds = cost to call / (pot + cost to call). Example: pot is $100, opponent bets $50, you need to call $50. Pot odds = 50/200 = 25%. If your chance of winning exceeds 25%, calling is profitable long-term. Flush draw on the flop (35% to hit) vs. pot odds of 25%? Call every time — it's mathematically profitable even if you miss this particular hand.
Implied Odds and Stack Depth
Pot odds don't account for future betting. Implied odds include the money you'll win on later streets when you hit. With a flush draw, you might only be getting 3:1 direct pot odds (need 25%), but if your opponent will pay off a big bet when you hit, the implied odds make calling (or even raising) correct. Deep stacks = bigger implied odds. This is why set mining (calling with small pairs hoping to flop a set) is profitable in deep-stacked games but not in short-stacked ones.
